The German Commission on Radiological Protection

An advisory body of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB)

The German Commission on Radiological Protection advises the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) on issues concerning the protection from the risks of ionising and non-ionising radiation.

Membership in the SSK is an honorary personal office. The members are appointed by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety. They are independent and not bound by directive. As a result of its advisory activity, SSK decides on statements and recommendations. Results adopted by majority vote are published by the competent Federal Ministry and on this website.

40 Year Anniversary of the German Commission on Radiological Protection

Federal minister for the environment, Barbara Hendricks, honours the work of the SSK

“The work you perform in an honorary and unfailing manner has been of great service not only to the ministry but also to the general public”, the federal minister for the environment, Barbara Hendricks, commends during the celebration which took place in Berlin. “It is due to your efforts that Germany has taken a major step forward in its awareness of radiation protection issues.”

40 years after its constitutive meeting on 17 October 1974 a commemorative event was held in Berlin to honour and recognize the German Commission on Radiological Protection.
