About SSK
Structure
The basic structure of SSK is set down in its statutes. Membership in the SSK is an honorary personal office. The members are independent and not bound by directive. A list of current SSK members is published in the Federal Bulletin at the beginning of each year.
The Commission on Radiological Protection usually consists of 14 members with special experience in one of the following fields:
- Radiation medicine
- Radioecology
- Radiation biology
- Radiation risk
- Radiation protection technology
- Emergency management
- Non-ionizing radiation
The competent Federal Ministry generally appoints members for a period of 3 calendar years. Immediate re-appointment shall basically not exceed a total period of 6 years, unless an extension is necessary for reasons of continuity in an unusual situation. After a Commission hearing, the Federal Ministry appoints the Commission Chairman and Vice-Chairman, in general for the duration of one calendar year. The tenure of office in immediate succession should, as a rule, not exceed a period of 2 years.
