Personal Dosimeter Requirements

Recommendation by the German Commission on Radiological Protection

Adopted at its 247th meeting on 24/25 February 2011

Abstract

The SSK has revised its recommendation of the same name issued in 2002.

The recommendation’s structure has not changed. The revised text stresses the distinction between official and operational dosimeters; official dosimeters are further differentiated as official passive or official electronic dosimeters. The recommendation indicates that the introduction of Hp(3) may be necessary in the future to measure eye lens doses. Further changes include the surveillance period, requirements for electronic dosimeters and for the use of a dosimeter in pulsed radiation fields, the use of a personal dosimeter for non-intended types of radiation, updating of minimum measurement ranges and minimum nominal ranges of use for measurands and influence quantities (knowledge ranges are no longer mentioned), updating and explanation of the permissible measurement deviations for the personal dose and revision of the graphs and tables.

The recommendation sets out minimum physical / technical requirements for personal dosimeters as the basis for development, manufacture, testing, distribution and evaluation of dosimeters. They meet the requirements of practical radiological protection in the case of external exposure to radiation, take account of the relevant recommendations of the ICRP, the EU and the IAEA, and supplement the existing technical standards and type test requirements. The recommendation pertains to personal dosimeters that are used in physical radiological protection control pursuant to the Radiation Protection Ordinance (Strahlenschutzverordnung) and the X-Ray Ordinance (Röntgenverordnung) for the monitoring of the personal dose and is not restricted to specific dosimeter types.
